Track 31: Understanding and Administering Employment Law

Participants will leave the sessions with a basic understanding of the employment system and process from hiring (advertising, job descriptions, interview processes, etc.), to duration of employment (wage and hour, leaves, work rules, etc.) to separation (good cause, at-will employees v. teacher tenure, etc.) Current collective bargaining issues and processes will be addressed in detail.

Learning Outcome:

  • Basic understanding of the course of employment related issues from hiring through separation of employment.
  • Identify the legal issues that arise throughout the course of employment process and know when it’s appropriate to contact district legal counsel.
  • Gain familiarity with their board policy and master contract(s).
  • Recognize the importance of documentation throughout the process.
